July Instapaper Highlights (Part 2)

Letter to My Younger Self | By Kobe Bryant

“Use your success, wealth and influence to put them in the best position to realize their own dreams and find their true purpose. Put them through school, set them up with job interviews and help them become leaders in their own right. Hold them to the same level of hard work and dedication that it took for you to get to where you are now, and where you will eventually go.”

It’s true that there does come a certain point where you “helping” your close ones by supporting them financially becomes more harmful than anything. If you find that you are constantly supporting someone financially or aren’t sure whether or not to, this is a good reminder that oftentimes the best thing to do is let them go through the pain and hustle themselves.

What Science Says To Do If Your Loved One Has An Opioid Addiction

“But now medical experts such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse define addiction as compulsive drug use that continues regardless of negative consequences.”

You can replace “drug” with any other act or substance to have a clear definition of what addiction means. Sometimes I find that this word can be hazy and it seems as though people have a different definition of it. I like this definition and tend to agree.

Gucci Mane, Buff, Sober, Out of the Pen and Ready to Flow

“In prison, Gucci stuck largely to routine, concentrating on prayer, working out and reading, especially the Bible and self-help books by Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra. He now flawlessly speaks the language of recovery and therapy. ‘I’m my own therapist,’ he said. ‘I been changed from before I even got out.'”

NY Times did a great write-up on Gucci Mane post-prison. If Gucci can get clean and lose weight, so can you. Happy to hear he’s doing better and encouraging others to do the same (see below).

“Can y’all copy living how I’m living?” he asked. “Can y’all copy getting y’all life together?”

Don’t add your 2 cents | Derek Sivers

“The boss’s opinion is no better than anyone else’s. But once you become the boss, unfortunately your opinion is dangerous because it’s not just one person’s opinion anymore — it’s a command! So adding your two cents can really hurt morale.”

Really enjoyed this article about how if you are a boss or manager at your workplace, adding your opinion and thoughts to everything might not be the best decision. How many people would actually disagree with their boss or manager?

“But if your contribution is small and probably just a meaningless opinion, just let it go. Let the other person feel full ownership of the idea, instead.”

I hadn’t thought about it in this way, but every single time you add your two cents to something small it’s actually pointless for the most part. Sure, certain scenarios call for your two cents, but a lot don’t.

Reading Lists Are The New Mixtapes

“That was ten years ago. To this day, whenever I hear one of those songs, I can still remember the way I felt driving around in my silver Volvo S70 sedan with the Sharpie-emblazoned disc in the player. However, it recently struck me that, in the internet age, the care and intention with which we used to pick out songs for our friends, lovers, and intellectual crushes has been directed to something else: reading material.”

This article may have uncovered why I enjoy finding and sharing well-written articles online. I used to live making mixtape for friends and curating playlists… I do the same thing now, but for reading.

“But when it comes to what I read, the internet offers such a dizzying array of options and such overwhelming amounts of dross that the algorithmic offerings often end up feeling empty and predictable. Instead, I actively seek out the curated reading of human beings I admire—and see it as a privilege to do the same for others.”

I can totally relate to this. I love the fact that my RSS feed gives me exactly the writing I want to read, and nothing more.

American Exceptionalism on Ice

“There is something Emersonian in the ritual of carrying a bucket to the humming, communal fountain and filling it with sharp, hard water.”

You would think an article written about ice wouldn’t be that interesting, but this article was so relatable to me. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been traveling a lot this year, but there’s something about walking through the hallways of a hotel in the middle of the night with a bucket to grab ice that is an American ritual. I never realized that this wasn’t the case in other countries.

3 Core Pieces of the SEO Puzzle to Boost Your Enterprise Success

“SEO is not something that is done. SEO is a way of doing things that encompasses many teams and initiatives. This is especially true for large organizations with well-established and potentially siloed teams.”

A great and insightful article from my coworker – Ben – on what SEO actually is within an organization. He offers some great insights into how companies should think about SEO. If you’re confused about what SEO is or how you can be a better consultant for your clients, I would highly recommend this read.
